Graphic Design
Design is, in many ways, the art of adding non-verbal information to written
language. When we speak to one another, our non-verbal clues of gesture,
tone of voice, and facial expression all add to our ability to communicate.
Design can raise the level of communication and the depth of information
offered - but only if the data and the non-verbal elements of design (shape,
color and type), are used successfully.
Graphical User
Interface Design
Understanding the language of user interaction is key to a successful
site design. Much like a software application, users do not separate their
experience from the design. The look and feel of your Website can be aesthetically
pleasing, but if it cannot meet your users needs, then your site has failed
no matter how relevant the information. And likewise, if your site is
easy to navigate and informative, but is aesthetically poor, your site
has still failed.
Information Architecture
As it pertains to the Web, information architecture is a combination of
organizing a Website's content into categories and creating an intuitive
interface to support those categories. This allows visitors to accomplish
their tasks with as little effort and confusion as possible. IA acts as
the blueprint of the Website, upon which all other aspects are built,
including form, function, metaphor, navigation and interface, interaction,
and visual design.
